Eat your skin beautiful

Beauty really does come from within, what you eat or put into your body impacts what we see on your face. Skin care products are fabulous but at the end of the day they are only treating the upper layers of skin, and if you are not getting the results you want from them you need to look at what you are putting into your body too. The best thing you can do for your skin is eat a diet rich in antioxidants which protect against free radicals and oxidative stress.

Vitamin C - Essential for the formation of collagen, a great antioxidant to fight free radicals in the body. Some common sources are brocolli, capsicum, oranges, watermelon, strawberries and tomatoes. Start your day with a cup of warm water and lemon to speed up metabolism and detoxify the skin.

Vitamin E - Works in synergy with Vitamin C to provide extra protection to skin cells. Foods high in Vitamin E are whole grains, oats, nuts, seeds and spinach.

Beta Carotene - Aka Vitamin A is essential for growth and repair of skin tissue and protecting against sun damage. Common food sources are carrots, red peppers, pumpkin and sweet potato.

Selenium - Is an antioxidant known to help skin retain firmness and elasticity. Find selenium in Brazil nuts, tuna, whole grain bread, wheat germ, and eggs.

Essential Fatty Acids - Omega 3 found in oily fish such as tuna and salmon and omega 6 found in seeds and nuts helps to reduce redness and inflammation in the skin, so great for sufferers of inflammatory conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.

Water - The best skin care and its free! Drink 2 litres daily. More if you are in a hot place, exercising or sweating excessively.

Cut back on:

Sugar - depletes collagen
Dairy, processed foods and red meat - these all contain hydrogenated oils or fats that clog the skin
Alcohol and caffeine - drain moisture from the body
